Chernihiv Youth Library
Monument of local significanceThis Gothic Revival building originally housed the first museum of Ukrainian history in the Russian empire. The museum preserved Cossack antiquities, manuscripts, works of art and an extensive collection connected to Taras Shevchenko.
In 1978, the building became the Chernihiv Youth Library. It survived the Second World War, but was severely damaged during a Russian aerial bombardment on 11 March 2022.
Ivankiv Museum of Local History
Monument of national significanceThe Ivankiv Museum of Local History was more than a museum. For decades, it preserved the history, traditions and cultural identity of the Ivankiv region and served as an important cultural space for the local community. Its collection included historical and ethnographic objects, works by local artists and craftspeople, and a unique collection of works by the world-renowned Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko, who was born and lived nearby.
In the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the museum was destroyed by Russian shelling. As the building burned, local residents risked their lives to save its collection. They entered the burning museum and rescued 14 works by Prymachenko, along with other cultural objects. Their actions became a powerful example of a community protecting its heritage with its own hands.
The restoration of the museum is therefore not only about rebuilding what was destroyed. It is about restoring an important cultural centre for Ivankiv and creating a space that can contribute to the community’s recovery and future development — a place to preserve local memory, share knowledge, bring people together and strengthen a sense of belonging and pride in their heritage.
Skovorodynivka National Memorial Museum
Monument of national significanceThe museum is dedicated to Hryhorii Skovoroda, one of Ukraine’s most influential philosophers, poets and thinkers of the 18th century.
On the night of 6 May 2022, the Museum was hit by a Russian missile strike. The historic building was severely damaged and partially destroyed by fire. The UCHF will support the recovery of Skovorodynivka as a place where the philosophy of Skovoroda can remain relevant to contemporary Ukraine.
Restoring the museum will create a space for learning, dialogue and community connection, while preserving a part of Ukraine’s intellectual identity. A functioning museum can also contribute to the economic revitalization of the community – a small village nearby Khrakiv, – by attracting visitors, supporting local services and creating opportunities for cultural tourism.

ALIPH has therefore been working alongside Ukrainian heritage and professionals since February 2022, supporting the protection of museum, archive, and library collections, and the stabilization and documentation of historic monuments and sites. ALIPH is now contributing its experience to the establishment of this new Ukraine Cultural Heritage Fund.
