Historical references:
This Gothic Revival building originally housed the first museum of Ukrainian history in the Russian empire. The museum preserved Cossack antiquities, manuscripts, works of art and an extensive collection connected to Taras Shevchenko.
In 1978, the building became the Chernihiv Youth Library. It survived the Second World War, but was severely damaged during a Russian aerial bombardment on 11 March 2022.
Damage:
The UCHF will create a modern inclusive space for the community that will provide space for locals to meet, learn, exchange ideas and therefore foster the region’s revitalization. It is an especially important place because Russia specifically targets Ukrainian literature, with millions of books destroyed over the last couple of months.
The UCHF have already started the project development.
Restoration Progress:
Conservation work has been carried out on part of the premises.
